CENTER FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH AND WELLNESS

School of Health and Human Sciences

The Center for Women’s Health and Wellness held a very successful Annual Research Forum on Women’s Health and Wellness on March 25, 2022. It consisted of a keynote presentation, abstract presentations, roundtables discussions, CWHW research updates, and was followed by a networking lunch!

Keynote Presentation

The keynote presentation, “Promoting active living among Latinas: The critical role of interdisciplinary, multi-sector research to address inequities”, was given by our own Dr. Sandra Echeverria. Her talk was followed by a supplemental discussion by Dr. Deanne Brooks.

Dr. Sandra E. Echeverría earned her Ph.D. in epidemiology from Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health and is a tenured Associate Professor in Public Health Education, at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. As a social epidemiologist, her research program examines how built environment, immigrant, and sociopolitical determinants influence cardiovascular health in oppressed groups, particularly communities of Latin American origin. She focuses on understanding how the social environment reinforces health behaviors such as physical activity and works with community partners in the translation of research evidence to intervene on social and environmental injustices shaping cardiovascular health and risk factors. In this talk, Dr. Echeverria will highlight how an interdisciplinary, multi-sector research program can advance understanding and intervention approaches to promote active living among Latinas living in the United States. She will present an overview of physical activity inequities for Latinas, how physical activity intersects with structural conditions, and how she has shaped her research program to include collaborators from different disciplines, sectors, and emerging public health professionals (i.e., students).

Abstract Presentations

Abstract presentations were given by graduate students from the departments of Nutrition, Kinesiology, and Psychology highlighting the exciting research focused on women and girls’ health and wellness that is occurring at UNCG.

Roundtable Discussions

Two roundtables occurred on “Real-time assessment of health behaviors: Understanding women’s daily lives” and “Biopsychosocial determinants of maternal health”, which prompted lively, engaging discussions among the participants and roundtable facilitators.
