OVERVIEW

ADOLESCENT GIRLS’ PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STUDY

We are an interdisciplinary team of investigators with expertise in biopsychosocial and environmental factors that influence adolescent girls’ daily physical activity.

Despite the known benefits of physical activity, most youth do not meet recommended guidelines for physical activity, and female youth are at the greatest risk of inactivity. Physical activity significantly drops across early adolescence and therefore this project aims to identify the most salient determinants of physical activity in this developmental period.

LATINAS IN ACTION

We are an interdisciplinary team of investigators with expertise in individual, interpersonal, environmental, and systemic factors that influence Latinas’ physical activity.

Latinas are the largest, fastest growing female ethnic group in the USA, report low levels of physical activity and suffer disproportionately from chronic health conditions. An abundant body of evidence suggests that features of one’s environment (i.e., the settings where people live, work and play) are key drivers of physical activity in populations. However, we know very little about how various contextual features influence physical activity in Latinas overall and in their daily lived experience. This project aims to determine feasibility and acceptability of smartphone-based assessments of contextual features paired with device-based behavioral monitoring among Latinas.
