ADRAssociate Dean for ResearchDr. Esther Leerkes is the Associate Dean for Research. Dr. Leerkes is responsible for facilitating the HHS research enterprise and supporting the HHS research mission which is to provide exceptional unit-based support services that facilitate faculty success with research development, grant submission and management, and scholarly productivity. She coordinates the work of the team of the HHS Office of Research, which includes pre-award, post-award, statistical consultation, and financial management staff.
AORAssumption of RiskAn internal form which allows the University to assume responsibility for research costs incurred prior to funds being received for an awarded grant and allows work to begin; now known as Pre-Award Risk Assumption (PRA)
CayuseCayuseCayuse or Cayuse Research Suite isthe cloud-based electronic research administration software system used by UNCG.
Cayuse Human EthicsCayuse Human EthicsThe online IRB submission system; replaces the former online IRB submission system, IRBIS
C&GContracts & GrantsThe central office at UNCG tasked with administration of funded awards
CBPRCommunity-based Participatory ResearchA partnership approach to research that equitably involves community members, organizational representatives, researchers, and others in all aspects of the research process
CFRNThe Child and Family Research NetworkGroup of UNCG faculty and researchers whose scholarship and teaching reflects a core concern for the welfare of children and families
COICayuse Outside InterestsSystem of approvals and review intended to set appropriate bounds for outside activities that may create a financial conflict of interest or require a formal management plan; formerly known as Conflict of Interest (COI)
DODDepartment of DefenseBranch of the federal government which coordinates functions of the military and US national security; possible funder
EPAFElectronic Personnel Action FormAn internal form which processes personnel and salary actions, such as charging a portion of salary to a grant fund or processing summer add pay
F&AFacilities & AdministrativeFederally negotiated rate to cover the facilities and administrative costs incurred by the University (currently 45.5%)
GRAGraduate AssistantA paid student position that supports the teaching, research, or service mission of UNCG
GROWTHGerontology Research, Outreach, Workforce, & Teaching HubA cooperative group of UNCG faculty who facilitate and support transdisciplinary aging-related research, education, and outreach 
HHS OORHealth and Human Sciences Office of ResearchThe HHS School level office that aids in research administration
HIRNHealth Improvement Research NetworkA group of faculty members and researchers whose scholarship and teaching includes work about how the health system is structured, health promotion/prevention/care is delivered, and desired outcomes are achieved
IACUCInstitutional Animal Care and Use CommitteeEnsures the ethical care and use of animals used in research studies
IBCInstitutional Biosafety CommitteeProtect study personnel, the environment, and the community from biohazardous agents
ICRIndirect Cost RateFederally negotiated rate to cover the facilities and administrative costs incurred by the University (currently 45.5%)
IESInstitute of Education SciencesA branch of the Department of Education focused on education practice and policy research; possible funder

NCENo Cost ExtensionAn extension of an NIH award which allows additional project time of up to 12 months, with no additional funds
NIHNational Institutes of HealthThe medical research branch of the Department of Health and Human Services; possible funder
NOANotice of AwardThe official grant award notification received upon award of an NIH grant. Some other funders use NGA: notice of grant award.
NSFNational Science FoundationUS government agency supporting non-medical research in science and engineering; possible funder
OREOffice of Research & EngagementThe internal office of research and engagement at UNCG; oversees OSP, ORI, convenes RAC, houses several research centers, etc.
ORIOffice of Research IntegrityInternal office at UNCG tasked with creating and providing clarity in research integrity policies and procedures that promote research
OSPOffice of Sponsored ProgramsThe central office at UNCG tasked with assistance and administration of awards
PRAPre-Award Risk AssumptionAn internal form which allows the University to assume responsibility for research costs incurred prior to funds being received for an awarded grant, and allows work to begin; formerly called Assumption of Risk (AOR)

RAMSeSResearch Administration Management System & eSubmissionAn internal grant tracking and administration system used by UNCG; the new system, Cayuse SP, replaced RAMSeS in summer 2021, but RAMSeS is still used for some historical data storage and retrieval
