• • Dr. Barbara N. Clawson Nonwestern International Travel Award
    Dr. Clawson is Professor Emerita of the School of Human Environmental Sciences at UNCG. She is also a 1962 alumna, having earned her M.S. in Home Economics. She was instrumental in establishing a cooperative agreement between HES and Edgerton University in Kenya.
    Eligible: This fund supports student travel to nonwestern countries for study.

• • Virginia Morgan Dysard Scholarship
    Virginia Morgan Dysard was a loyal and active supporter of the School of Home Economics and member of the Class of 1933. Her love of education and belief in service to the community led Mrs. Dysard to teaching and a life-long commitment to service.
    Eligible: This award supports a graduate or undergraduate student in one of the following departments: Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work.

• • Edith S. Hinshaw Endowed Scholarship
    Edith S. Hinshaw graduated from WC in 1941 with a degree in General Home Economics. She attended Vanderbilt University on a scholarship and was always impressed that someone cared enough about education to provide funding for her graduate degree.
    Eligible: Students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work are eligible; preference is for students with financial need.

• • Robinette Meador Husketh Scholarship Fund
    This fund was established by Mrs. Robinette Meador Husketh, ’49, a Rockingham County native. She was a home economics teacher in Granville County before becoming the first director of food services for the county-wide system.
    Eligible: Students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work are eligible. Preference is given students from Rockingham and Granville counties.

• • Miriam Scott Mayo and Hazeleene Tate Scott Scholarship
    This scholarship was established by Miriam Scott Mayo, Class of 1948, in memory of her mother, Hazeleene Tate Scott, Class of 1923.
    Eligible: It is awarded annually to students who demonstrate a high level of academic excellence in one of the following departments: Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work.

• • Marveen R. Perkins Scholarship
    Marveen Perkins joined the Dean’s staff in 1971 and served 5 Deans over 36 years in the School of Human Environmental Sciences. This award was established on her retirement in 2007.
    Eligible: Graduate and undergradues students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work are eligible.

• • The Class of 1969/Marie I. Riley Student Travel Fund
    Dr. Riley came to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) in 1963 and retired in 1988. She was head of the Physical Education Division from 1981-1984 (now Kinesiology) and when it became a department, she was its Acting Head for one year.
    Eligible: This fund supports Undergraduate and Graduate students from the Departments of Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology, or Public Health Education for attending professional meetings where they are to receive an award or present a paper.

• • Esther F. Segner Scholarship
    This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Esther F. Segner, former faculty member in the School of Home Economics. The award was established by her sister, Hazel May Segner to perpetuate the memory of her sister.
    Eligible: Recipients must display academic merit. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student enrolled in one of the following departments: Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work.

• • Nell Wilborn Thayer scholarship
    This award was established by Helen Thayer Bowling, ’33, and Harry L. Bowling to honor Helen’s mother. The Bowlings believe strongly in the importance of a college education.
    Eligible: This fund supports students with financial need. Students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work are eligible.

• • The Carol Klose Crouse Undergraduate Scholarship
    Carol Klose Crouse, ’63, received her degree from Woman’s College in Physical Education. She and her husband Tom made this gift to the School of Health and Human Sciences to provide for a student the opportunity of obtaining a wonderful education like Carol did when she was a student at UNCG.
    Eligible: A current rising sophomore, junior or senior, in good academic standing, enrolled with a full academic load in one of these departments is eligible: Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Kinesiology, Public Health Education.

• • Cultural Diversity Scholarships
    Duke Power (now Duke Energy) established this award to honor Dean Naomi Albanese, who served on their Board of Directors.
    Eligible: These awards support full time minority students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work who maintain a 3.0 GPA.

• • Barbara Davis Fodor Scholarship
    This award was established as part of the Students First Campaign, in celebration of Barbara Davis Fodor’s 50th graduation reunion from the School of Home Economics and Woman’s College in 1959. Her career spanned 30 years with a regional trade association and a national manufacturer of speciality small appliances. She was one of very few women in the management ranks of these industries at the time.
    Eligible: Undergraduate students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work are eligible for this award. Students with financial need are given preference.

• • Gilliam scholarship Award
    This award was established in 1979 by Bess Gilliam Kerley, class of 1940.
    Eligible: Incoming freshman from Burke County, NC are eligible for this award; preference is for students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work.

• • The Priscilla Mullen Gowen Scholarship
    Priscilla Mullen Gowen graduated from the Woman’s College (now UNCG) in 1934.
    Eligible: This award was established to recognize undergraduate students in the Departments of Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Kinesiology, and Public Health Education, who have demonstrated leadership skills or potential and/or have been active with extracurricular activities on campus.

• • The Nancy Burton Hockett Scholarship
    Nancy Burton Hockett was born in Greensboro, NC. Throughout her life, she pursued her love of sports and the outdoors by participating in many sports–especially tennis–and summer camp counseling.
    Eligible: Students with a demonstrated involvement in extracurricular and/or service activities (emphasis on teaching physical education, coaching sports, or work with the YWCA/YMCA, camping, parks and recreation)in one of these departments are eligible: Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Kinesiology, Public Health Education.

    Through a bequest, this award was made available by Ms. Rachel Snipes Venette, ’32.
    Eligible: This fund supports undergraduate students from Johnston or Onslow counties majoring in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work.

• • The Marge Leonard Scholarship
    Marge Leonard ’39, taught in the Department of Physical Education at Woman’s College/UNCG from 1941 until her retirement in 1971. This award honors her memory and rewards a current student who reflects the characteristics used to describe Ms. Leonard: Sensitive to the needs of others, generous, possessing high standards and a love of nature.
    Eligible: Students in these departments are eligible: Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Kinesiology, Public Health Education.

• • Lois Steeneck Maloney Scholarship
    This award was established in 2012 by Lois Steeneck Maloney to assist an undergraduate student in financial need to obtain a quality education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
    Eligible: Students in Kinesiology, Public Health Education, Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Community and Therapeutic Recreation are eligible. This award can be renewed for students with financial need who remain in good academic standing.

• • Betty Rowe Penny Endowed Scholarship
    Established by Betty Rowe Penny and her spouse, Horace D. Penny, in honor of the Class of ’59 Woman’s College Reunion. They also established an athletic scholarship at NC State. Betty retired after 28 years of teaching service in eastern North Carolina and then served as a part-time counselor of vocational education.
    Eligible: Undergraduate students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, and Nutrition are eligible for this award.

• • Sam A. And Cornelia (Neil) Lowe Rankin Undergraduate Scholarship
    Cornelia Lowe Rankin graduated from Woman’s College in 1945 with a BS in Home Economics. She wished to assist students, beyond her own children, with the cost of their education.
    Eligible: This award responds to that desire. Undergraduate students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work are eligible.

• • Nancy Coleman Ross and Betty Ross Dickson Scholarship
    Nancy Coleman Ross was a 1921 graduate of Winthrop College in Home Economics Education and along with her three sisters, also Winthrop graduates, became a teacher in a time that college education was rare. Her daughter, Betty Ross, graduated from WC in 1952 in Business Administration.
    Eligible: Students in Human Development and Family Studies, Nutrition, Social Work, and the Bryan School of Business and Economics are eligible.

• • The Barbara Alley Simon Scholarship in Memory of Grace Brown Alley
    This award honors the memory of Grace Brown Alley and the 50th anniversary of Barbara Alley Simon’s graduation from the School of Home Economics at Woman’s College. Grace Brown Alley was a ‘consummate Home Economics teacher’, and she attained a Masters Degree in Home Economics from Columbia University-Teachers College in 1943, a rare feat for a woman of that time.

• • Madeline B. Street Scholarship
    Ms. Madeline B. Street was a staff member in the School of Home Economics for 35 years. This award was established in1965 in her honor.Eligible: A rising sophomore, junior or senior in Consumer Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work is eligible.

• • S. Virginia Wilson Scholarship
    The award was established by Ruth C. Wilson, ’25, to honor her sister, S. Virginia Wilson, ’26. Virginia Wilson taught Home Economics at Durham Academy and Salem Academy. She served for 24 years as an Extension Food and Nutrition Specialist at NCSU.Elibible: Students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work are eligible for this award. The Wilson family strongly encourages Study Abroad experiences for students.

• • Naomi G. Albanese Doctoral Fellowship Fund
    This fellowship was established by the Home Economics Alumni Association as part of the special recognition given to Dr. Albanese for her twenty-two years of leadership and service as Dean of the School of Human Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.Eligible: Doctoral students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, and Nutrition are eligible.

• • Marge Burns Graduate Fellowship
    Marjorie Burns graduated from Woman’s College in 1946 with a degree in physical education. She spent her career playing and teaching golf, and was named Carolina’s Amateur Athlete of the Year five times. She received the School of HHP Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991 and was a charter inductee of the UNCG Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.Eligible: This award supports an incoming graduate student in Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Kinesiology, or Public Health Education, and is renewable for 2 (master’s) or 3 years (doctoral) of study.

• • Ella Gray Wilson Ennis Graduate Award
    Ella Gray Ennis was born near Dunn, NC in 1925. She graduated from the Woman’s College (now UNCG) in 1945 with a degree in Grammar Grades Education. She eventually earned a PhD in physiology from UNC-CH and joined the Medical School faculty there, retiring after 16 years.Eligible: This award supports a graduate student in either Kinesiology or Nutrition with interest in exercise physiology or nutrition.

• • The Nell A. Stallings Graduate Fellowship
    Nell Stallings, Class of 1936, was a native of Franklin County, NC. She majored in Physical Education at Woman’s College.Eligible: The Nell A. Stallings Graduate Fellowship is for students in the Departments of Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Kinesiology, and Public Health Education,was established in 2002 through a bequest from her estate.

• • D. Elizabeth Williams International Scholarship Fund In 1975, Miss. D. Elizabeth Williams, a retired home economist, established an endowed scholarship for an international graduate student in the School of Human Environmental Sciences. During her career, Miss Williams served as a home economics extension agent for Guilford County, NC and also held various international teaching positions.Eligible: Students in Consumer, Apparel & Retail Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Nutrition, and Social Work are eligible.
