Ellen Hickman Scholarship
Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Hickman established this award in 1975 to honor their daughter Ellen, a 1975 graduate in Child Development-Family Relations. Eligible: Graduate and undergraduate students in Human Development and Family Studies are eligible for this award, based on academic excellence and financial need.
The Richard H. Klemer Scholarship
This award was established by family and friends of Dr. Richard H. Klemer at the time of his death in 1972. Dr. Klemer was Department Chair in Child Development and Family Studies from 1960-1972. Eligible: This award funds graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.
Dr. Jacqueline H. Voss Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Jacqueline H. Voss was Dean of the School of Human Environmental Sciences 1982-1992. She believed that people have different ideas about solutions to problems, yet are committed to enhancing the quality of lives of those we encounter. Eligible: Students in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies are eligible.

Helen Canady Scholarship Fund
This award was established in 1984 to honor Dr. Canady, a retired professor in Child Development (now Human Development and Family Studies). Helen Canady was a popular faculty member who arrived at Woman’s College by train in 1956. She was an early pioneer in the Nursery Program, now known as the Consolidated Childcare Program. Eligible: The award supports an undergraduate student in HDFS based on academic achievement and need.
Child Development Scholarship
Established by Dr. Frances J. Cope, ’47, to support students majoring in Human Development and Family Studies. Dr. Cope’s career included directing nursery school programs and teaching in child care units. She spent many years as a Family Development Specialist for the NC Extension Service. Eligible: Preference will be given to rising juniors and seniors emphasizing child development, who demonstrate financial need and academic merit.
Hattie, Hattie, Sallie Scholarship
This award is named for Hattie S. Parrott, Hattie Moseley Person and Sallie E. Parrot Moseley, 3 Alumni of ‘The Normal’, endowed by Isabelle Moseley Fletcher Perry (’37). Hattie, Hattie, and Sallie were her mother and her aunts.Eligible: This award funds an undergraduate student in Human Development and Family Studies.
James B and Carolyn L Hunt Early Childhood Scholarship fund
This award was established in 2000 to honor Governor James Hunt and his wife, Carolyn. They led the fight to assure all children in North Carolina get the opportunity to be successful. Governor Hunt began the Smart Start Program in 1993. Smart Start’s mission is to assure that all children begin school healthy and ready to succeed. Eligible: Students admitted to the B-K program are eligible for this award.
E. York Kiker Scholarship in Home Economics (HDF)
E. York Kiker was a Women’s College graduate in 1939. She was a loyal and devoted alumna who was a pioneer within the State in the area of Home Economics Education. She served the NC Department of Agriculture between 1943-1981. She was instrumental getting milk in schools and worked with PTA groups to provide school lunches. She was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award of the UNCG Alumni Association. Eligible: Preference for this award is an undergraduate student in HDF.
Julia Richman Scholarship
Established by Dr. Samuel Richman to honor his wife, Julia, who received her MS in Child Development and Family Relations in 1968. Eligible: Students who are majors in the Department of Human Development and Family Relations.
Cheryl Sosnik Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by the friends and family of Cheryl Sosnik, BSHE, ’74. Cheryl was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the summer following her graduation and battled the disease courageously. She was a motivator for many in the causes of the physically challenged and spoke to many groups about these challenges. Eligible: Undergraduates in Human Development and Family Studies are eligible for this award. Preference is given to students with a disability or those who plan to work with children with disabilities.
I.V. Sperry Scholarship Fund
The Irwin V. Sperry Scholarship was established in the early 1970s by family and friends in memory of Dr. Sperry, a popular faculty member of Woman’s College and Department Chair of the program now known as Human Development and Family Studies.
Barbara Reynolds Todd Scholarship
Barbara Reynolds Todd received bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees from the former School of Home Economics at UNCG. She was a lifelong educator in Wilkes County, NC. Barbara recently retired as Superintendent of Yadkin County Schools and continues her love of teaching by serving as an adjunct professor at Winthrop and Appalachian State Universities. Eligible: Students who are in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. Preference will go to B-K licensure students from Wilkes and Yadkin counties.
Dr. Nancy White Undergraduate Scholarship Fund
This fund was established to honor Dr. White, on the occasion of her retirement in 1988. Dr. White was the first student to receive the Ph.D. in child development in North Carolina and the only student to receive the Ph.D. From Woman’s College. A month after she received her degree, WC became The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Eligible: Students in Human Development and Family Studies are eligible.

Mary Elizabeth Keister Scholarship
This fund was established to honor Dr. Mary Elizabeth Keister’s contributions to the field of child development. Eligible: This scholarship was awarded annually to support an outstanding doctoral student in Human Development and Family Studies for achievement in the areas of infancy and early childhood.
Vira R. Kivett Outstanding Publication Award in Human Development and Family Studies
This award was established to honor Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan at her retirement and to establish a legacy to honor Dr. Vira A. Kivett’s cutting edge research. Her research, service, and contributions to policy on behalf of older adults led to receipt of the O. Max Gardner Award, the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member in the UNC University system. Eligible: Graduate students in HDF who have published their research in a nationally-recognized journal in human development and family studies are eligible.
Rebecca McCulloch Smith Scholarship
Established by husband George C. Smith and son John Randolph Smith to honor Rebecca McCulloch Smith for her 33 years of loyal and dedicated service to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She joined the faculty in 1958 as an instructor, earned her Ph.D. in 1967 and retired as a Professor. Eligible: Graduate students in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies are eligible.
Josie Nance White Fellowship
This fellowship was originally established by Dr. Naomi Albanese in honor of Dr. J. Nance White, associate professor emerita of child development and family studies who, in 1963, became the first recipient of the Ph.D. degree awarded at UNCG. Eligible: Doctoral students in the human development and family studies and curriculum and teaching, with an emphasis in elementary education, are eligible.
Jay A. Mancini Graduate Award in Human Development and Family Studies
The Jay A. Mancini Graduate Award in Human Development and Family Studies provides support for research expenditures, workshop fees, travel costs to attend conferences, or other purposes directly tied to graduate student research. Eligible: Graduate students in Human Development and Family Studies are eligible.
