Within the Joint M.S.W. Program, multicultural clinical practice recognizes the culture, history, and identities of all peoples with emphasis on people who are oppressed, marginalized, and traumatized, as well as contemporary patterns of social, economic, and health inequalities. This knowledge is applied in establishing culturally sensitive therapeutic relationships that promote resiliency.
Assessments in multicultural clinical practice are derived from psychological, ecological, and community contextual perspectives. Through the application of a broad range of culturally responsive social work assessment and intervention approaches, multicultural clinical practice strives to enhance social functioning and improve the quality of life for people and communities. Practice is evaluated through the use of culturally responsive methodologies.
Electives
Each student is required to take 2 elective courses. Electives are designed to provide additional knowledge and skill to further develop capacity to engage in advanced multicultural clinical social work practice. Each year, multiple electives will be offered based on student interest and instructor availability.
Regardless of which is their home campus, students may take their elective at either UNC Greensboro or NC A&TSU. Students who take an elective at the host (rather than home) campus, will register with the Joint Programs Cross Registration Form at the student’s home campus.
Electives must be graduate-level courses and may be taken within the social work departments or in other related departments, with permission of the student’s academic advisor. Advisor permission is not required to take a Joint M.S.W. elective.
