Former UNCG alumna and Department of Nutrition Professor Burgin Ross served in Liberia with the Peace Corps, and learned a lot while there.
“I wasn’t scared. Except for snakes, rats, dysentery, and malaria. I was eager to see the world, ” she said. “I had the protection of the U.S. Government.”
She swiftly discovered that nutritional advice was the smallest part of her work. Villagers were far more eager to learn skills like hand sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Yet Ross’ best attended lecture was when she was invited to discuss birth control.
