UNCG presents “The R-Word” film screening

R-Word-Screening

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words shall never hurt me.”

The old adage was once used as a defense against insults and bullying because language has power. For underserved populations, some words can be incredibly damaging.

What is the effect of language on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities? We invite you to find out by joining us for “The R-Word,” a free, interactive, virtual film screening event on Thursday, March 25 from 4 to 5:45 p.m. (EST) A panel discussion with local self-advocates and family members will immediately follow the screening.

Filmmaker Amanda Lukoff grew up advocating for her sister Gabrielle, especially when she heard the word “retard(ed).” “The R-Word” unravels the history and lasting effects of this word through the lens of the sibling experience, captivating animation sequences and self-advocates speaking truth-to-power – ultimately, making the case for why the conversation surrounding people with intellectual and developmental disabilities needs to change.

It’s time for people with disabilities to become part of the equity and inclusion conversation.

The program schedule is as follows:

  • Introductions: Stuart Schleien and Lisa Pluff (4-4:05 p.m.)
